讲座摘要
This study explores how Chinese–Japanese bilinguals use Japanese classifiers to predict upcoming nouns during real-time comprehension. Using the visual world paradigm, the study examines whether cross-linguistic form-meaning overlap facilitates or interferes L2 prediction across cognate, non-cognate, and false-cognate conditions. The results show that participants were able to use classifiers predictively, but prediction strength differed across conditions. Non-cognates showed the strongest prediction, whereas false cognates showed the weakest prediction, suggesting interference from L1 semantic activation. Interestingly, cognates did not show a clear facilitative advantage, indicating that form overlap does not necessarily support prediction. This talk will discuss how form and meaning overlap across languages can differentially shape prediction in L2 comprehension.
