Zi rime change (子变韵) in some Chinese dialects is a phenomenon where the rime part of a syllable alters to serve the function of zi-suffixed words in Standard Chinese. A prominent feature of zi rime change in many dialects is that the it surfaces with a final segment resembling a high, back, rounded vowel, typically transcribed as /u/, such as [pfəːu51] (< [pfə53]) in the Wenxi (闻喜) dialect, corresponding to [tʂuo55.tsɿ0] ‘table’ in Standard Mandarin. However, the origin of the /u/ ending and its evolutionary path remain controversial. Based on an investigation of the phonetic realizations and phonological properties of zi rime change in the Xiaxian (夏县) and Wenxi dialects of southern Shanxi, this study proposes an alternative evolutionary path for the phenomenon. Specifically, the /u/ ending found in certain zi rime change forms may not derive from any specific suffix or segment. Rather, it is argued to be a phonetic by-product of vowel lengthening, which subsequently becomes phonologized and morphologized during the evolutionary process. （合作者：王晓培）
